ARCHAEOLOGICAL INVESTIGATION OF TRISTÁN DE LUNA’S 1559 COLONIZATION FLEET: PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE

The discovery and excavation of two sunken ships from the 1559 colonial fleet of Don Tristán de Luna y Arellano in Pensacola Bay, Florida has provided a unique opportunity for the University of West Florida to train students in both archaeological excavation and documentary research. The Emanuel Point I wreck, investigated between 1992 and 1998, and the Emanuel Point II wreck, discovered in 2006 and continually excavated to the present day, contain an extensive and well-preserved assemblage of mid-sixteenth-century artifacts. Both wrecks exhibit well-preserved lower hull remains. This paper will summarize the current stage of historical research, archaeological investigation, and future directions.
