PASTA Project stands for Physical Activity through Sustainable Transport Approaches. This EU project involves 14 partners and 7 case study cities. The project focuses on the promotion and factors enabling active mobility (i.e. walking and cycling including in combination with public transport use) in cities as an innovative approach to integrate physical activity into everyday life. Within the project, a questionnaire was launched in 7 cities and the results will contribute to policy making. One of the analyses of the survey data looks into the behavioural change towards active mobility, that is, factors affecting people’s choices to take up or increase walking and/or cycling. I am looking particularly at factors generated by public policies, and thus try to assess what policies affect more people in different stages of the change process. Theories like the Transtheoretical Model will be used to establish different profiles of the participants into the different stages. This presentation explores the links between the behaviour change towards active mobility focusing on the anthropological factors, such as ethnicity, age or gender and the image of cyclists, and how this will be integrated in the project research. We will be looking at possible tools and strategies to better understand the anthropological factors of cycling behaviour and translate them into policy making.
